Peer-graded Assessments

Let learners evaluate one another using shared criteria, with a named expert overseeing the result

Peer-Graded Assessments (1:49)

Peer-graded assessments ask learners to submit their own work and evaluate other people's submissions. You define the criteria, how many evaluations are required, and the passing score. A named expert can review submissions and set the final result.

For work marked by designated reviewers, see Expert-graded Assessments.

Create the assessment

  1. In Course Builder, add a Peer-graded assessment and open it.
  2. Enter the title, annotation, task instructions, and any reference attachments.
  3. Set the required number of evaluations, passing score, completion period, and attempt limit.
  4. Add a named expert who can oversee the work.
  5. Add the grading criteria. Give each criterion a clear name and describe what a good response should demonstrate.
  6. Save the assessment.

Place it in your simple course list, or connect the pass and fail routes in a branching course.

Submit and review

Learners read the task, criteria, and assessment rules before starting. They write a response or attach their work, then submit it.

The course gives them other submissions to evaluate. For each one, the learner scores the criteria and can add written comments. Learners complete the required reviews as part of the assessment.

Expert review

The expert can open submissions from the assessment's own page, score them using the same criteria, and add comments. The expert can also set a pass or fail result with written feedback.

Results

Learners can see their overall result and the feedback for each criterion. Expert feedback is identified; peer feedback does not show the reviewers' names.

Use criteria that are specific enough for different reviewers to apply consistently. Explain what evidence learners should submit and allow enough time for both the work and the peer reviews.
